Aisymnet

An aisymnet ( ancient Greek αἰσυμνητήρ aisymnetér , also dialacts διαλλακτής ) was originally an " arbiter " in ancient Greece in the 7th and 6th centuries BC .

During the seventh century BC, social tensions arose in numerous Greek poles . On the one hand, various aristocratic groups fought each other, and on the other hand, smallholders became increasingly dependent on the nobility. These conflicts harbored the potential for civil war, and so in many places the entire citizenry agreed on an aisymnet.

The aisymnets were given general powers and were supposed to mediate between the rival parties and to resolve social grievances. They also often changed parts of the constitution for this purpose. In many Poleis, their measures were insufficient to pacify the population, and a tyranny was established after their resignation . In some cities the extraordinary aisymnety developed into the magistrate .
