Ajattara is a Finnish dark metal band.

Band history

Ajattara was founded in 1996 by the then Amorphis singer Pasi "Ruoja" Koskinen . In 1998 the first demo cassette Helvetissä On Syntisen Taivas , recorded with drummer Pekka “Malakias” Sauvolainen, followed . The band soon signed a deal with Spinefarm Records , and Toni "Atoni" Laroma joined Ajattara as bassist. At the end of 2001 the debut album Itse was released . The first live performances also took place. In 2003 and 2004, Kuolema and Tyhjyys were released, both of which reached positions in the Finnish charts. In March 2006, Äpäre was the first album in which an entire band was involved in the recordings. Like its predecessors, it was able to place itself in the Finnish charts.

In November 2006, after a gig, all band members from that time parted with Pasi "Ruoja" Koskinen. A new line-up has existed since March 2007, including Tonmi Lillman from Sinergy and To / Die / For as well as Juha Harju from Shade Empire and Jane Immonen from Waltari . In September 2007, the fifth album Kalmanto was released , which reached number 18 in the Finnish charts.

In May 2009 Ajattara released an acoustic album called Noitumaa , which entered the Finnish charts at number 8, making it the band's most successful album to date.

style

Ajattara plays relatively slow, atmospheric Dark Metal with influences from Black , Death and Doom Metal . Keyboard tracks often take over the melody, strings and female vocals also appear. The harsh screeching singing of Pasi “Ruoja” Koskinen is often emphasized.

The band name comes from Finnish mythology and refers to an evil female forest spirit, also known under the name Ajatar . The language of the texts is exclusively Finnish . The lyrics are about negative aspects of life, murder and negative emotions.

reception

In addition to the last four albums, several singles were able to place in the Finnish charts, Ilon päivä , Joulusingle 2005 and Sika even reached second place in the single charts. Despite the Finnish lyrics, the band performs in Russia and the Netherlands, among others. It is often criticized that the band's albums are relatively short and do not consistently achieve a high quality.
