Ajmalicin , more precisely (-) - Ajmalicin (synonym: Raubasin ), is an indole alkaloid from the roots of the Indian snake root ( Rauvolfia serpentina ).
Pharmacological properties
Ajmalicin is an α1-adrenoceptor antagonist and, like reserpine, promotes peripheral blood flow, but without reducing blood pressure. It also has an anti-emetic effect. It is used medicinally in the adjuvant treatment of disorders of the peripheral arterial blood supply. Overdose can cause hypotension , tachycardia , dizziness, sweating, excitement, sedation and allergic skin reactions. Ajmalicin is of almost no therapeutic importance. In Germany, no monopreparations with this active ingredient are approved.
