The Academy for Sociology is a scientific association for the promotion of empirical- analytical sociology in research and teaching.

History and goals of the association

A call for founding was published in April 2017. The signatory was 112 scientists, the majority of them professors of sociology. The founding meeting took place in Mannheim in July of the same year. The association's goals are to promote an empirical-analytical sociology, which the members do not see sufficiently represented in the other social science associations. Exemplary specific requirements can be found in the founding call:

  • In sociological teaching, “more knowledge of systematic and stringent theory construction, modern empirical methods and fundamental criteria from the theory of science must be taken into account”.
  • The interdisciplinary exchange with political science, (social) psychology, economics, but also computer science or neurosciences should be strengthened.
  • Replications and, more generally, the transparency of the research process should be promoted.
  • Research results are to be used for “evidence-based policy advice”.

The founding of the association is partly criticized within sociology. In a series of blog posts on the website of the German Society for Sociology, Jörg Strübing accused the academy of not appreciating the diversity of sociology and of wanting to narrow the subject down to certain approaches. Journalistic comments in the weekly newspaper Der Freitag and in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung drew parallels to the positivism dispute in the 1960s.

The Academy is recognized by the German Research Foundation as one of the two specialist societies for the field of empirical social research and is also a specialist society entitled to propose to the Council for Social and Economic Data .
