The SB 14 is a single-seat glider from the Akaflieg Braunschweig of the FAI 18-meter class . The first flight took place on January 17, 2003 at Braunschweig Airport . The glider index is 118, the registration is D-9814 and the competition number is 10.

History and construction

The aim of the development was to create a glider that would combine the flight performance of older representatives of the open class with the practicality of the racing class. The result is an 18-m aircraft with flaps, winglets and a very narrow fuselage, the design of which goes back to investigations on ASW-19 fuselages in Braunschweig and Delft in the early 1980s . This enabled flow separation at the transition to the wings to be reduced. The cockpit with its rigid canopy frame is based on FEM studies of the deformation of the front fuselage in the event of a crash. The front part of the fuselage is made of GRP due to the greater energy absorption capacity in the cockpit area , the rear part of CFRP . The tail unit was wound from CFRP in a new process, the T-tail unit was taken over from the ASH 26 . Shell and spar caps of the triple trapezoidal wing high aspect ratio made of CFRP, the spar webs made of GRP. The wing is profiled at the root with the in-house developments CAWURZ and CAWUK, in the main part with CA2-134 / 15V2 and on the outside with CAJ1-134 / 18; there are blow-out turbulators on the underside of the flap .
