The Akaflieg Braunschweig SB 5 is a single-seat glider of the Academic Fliegergruppe Braunschweig with a V-tail.

history

Preliminary considerations for the "Glider Braunschweig" SB 5 arose directly after the re-establishment of Akaflieg Braunschweig in 1951. Designed for Central European weather and flight operations in clubs, the first draft was a 16-meter-span shoulder-wing wing with tubular steel framework and cross tail . A 1:20 model was measured in a wind tunnel in 1954.

After the introduction of an international standard glider class with a span limitation of 15 meters by the OSTIV in 1957, the aircraft design was revised. The SB 5 V1 flew for the first time on June 3, 1959 and was lost on June 6, 1961 due to structural overload in a thundercloud ; the pilot was able to save himself.

The modified version SB 5B had Schempp-Hirth brake flaps and an improved canopy instead of a braking parachute . About 20 to 25 copies of this version were made by the club and by Eichelsdörfer .

After the lifting of the span limitation in the new FAI club class, the SB 5E was built with a span of 16 meters.

In 1965, Akaflieg Braunschweig built the SB 5C as a single piece with a GFK - balsa front part, which corresponded to the cockpit of the SB 8, which is currently under development. This unique piece was manufactured as an aeronautical replacement for the SB 6 that was lost in an accident and the new cockpit was tested in the process.

construction

The fuselage consists of a plywood shell with a damped V-tail unit, brakable main wheel and grinding spur. The SB 5A has no brake flaps and instead a brake parachute is installed at the rear. The two-part wing in a shoulder wing arrangement is conventionally manufactured in a rib construction.
