The Akaflieg Munich Mü 5 "Wastl" was a non-flightable glider of the student flight group Akaflieg Munich , which was designed as a tailless aircraft .

history

In the late 1920s, several designers were working on tailless aircraft. Akaflieg München built the Mü 5 in just three months in 1930, which was also known as the flying egg because of its shape . August Kupper and Egon Scheibe , among others , were involved in the design. In the first few attempts, the aircraft flew only a few seconds before it tilted sideways. Despite some revisions, this problem could not be resolved and so the prototype soon broke during an attempt to fly and joined the long series of unsuccessful tailless aircraft projects.

variants

With the Mü 7 there were plans to use the wings of the Mü 5 "Wastl" for a project of a low-wind sailplane. However, the project was not carried out due to lack of time.
