Akakios Agathangelos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Akakios , also Acacius or Achatius with the surname Agathangelos ("good angel") was bishop of Antioch (ad Orontem) or more likely Antioch in Pisidia in the 3rd century . The title "von Melitene " in the Greek menologies is most likely due to a confusion with Akakios von Melitene, who was active at the Council of Ephesus (431) . Akakios is venerated in the Orthodox , Armenian and Catholic Churches as a saint and confessor , and in the Protestant Church he is also considered a memorable witness of faith.

He lived during the time of the persecution of Christians under the Roman emperor Decius (249-251) and encouraged the Christians of his diocese to stand firm, which gave him the reputation of a shield and a refuge for the whole area. It is certain that under Decius he was interrogated about his faith before the tribunal whose representative Martinius was, but he probably did not suffer the martyrdom . He was sentenced to death, but later - after a period of severe suffering - he was released from prison by Emperor Decius under the impression of the trial files.

Remembrance day

His feast day is March 31 in most churches (Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox) . The Orthodox churches also celebrate the transfer of the bones on September 15, 257 . The Armenian Church sets March 22nd as its feast day.
