Akbar Ahmed (born January 15, 1943 in Allahabad , British India ) is an American-Pakistani scholar, writer, Islamic scholar and former diplomat. He holds the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University , a private Methodist university in Washington, DC

Life

Akbar Ahmed grew up in Pakistan . He was the Pakistani High Commissioner in Balochistan . He is an anthropologist and Islamic scholar and received his PhD from the School of Oriental Studies in London . After five years as an Allama Iqbal Fellow at Selwyn College (Cambridge) , he was named the first Muslim Fellow in 1993. He was also the first Pakistani council member in the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland .

He was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (“Star of Excellence”) by the Pakistani government for his academic achievements . Together with Judea Pearl , he received the first Purpose Prize of the John Templeton Foundation in Pennsylvania in 2006 . In 2015 he was named a Global Thought Leader by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute . He was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter a common word between us and you ( Engl. A Common Word Between Us and You ), the personalities of Islam 2007 church leaders sent worldwide.
