Akkuş ( Turkish for "white bird" ) is a town in the district of the same name in the district of Akkuş in the Turkish province of Ordu .

It is not far from Mount Argan in Canik Dağları , a mountain range of the Pontic Mountains . Until 1954 it was called Karakuş ("black bird"). The D850 trunk road leads from the coastal town of Ünye on the Black Sea via Akkuş south to the town of Niksar in the neighboring province of Tokat .

history

In ancient times, the place belonged to the kingdom of Pontus . The first Turkish rulers of the region were the Danischmenden . From the 15th century, Akkuş belonged to the Ottoman Empire .
