Al Bairre was an indie pop band from South Africa founded in 2012 , which released an album and several singles in its almost five-year history. The band broke up in April 2017.

history

The band was formed in 2012 by Kyle Davis, Tom Kotze, Nicolas Preen and the twins Tessa Johnson and Julia Johnson in Hout Bay , a district of Cape Town and was musically influenced by bigger bands like Arcade Fire , Ra Ra Riot , Vampire Weekend and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros . The band released their first single When I Was Tall in the year they were founded , which was used in the video for London Fashion Week 2012. Two music videos were also produced for the single and Right Here in July , also released in 2012 .

In 2013 the band went on tour and played several concerts at local festivals: in addition to a performance at Rocking the Daisies in Darling , where The Hives , Alt-J and Boys Noize also performed, followed by concerts at Splashy Fen , at Synergy Live in Theewaterskloof , at the Utopia Music Festival and as the only local band at the In the City Festival in Johannesburg . In 2014 she performed at numerous events in South Africa, including the Ramfest, a music festival that has been held in several South African cities since 2007. Winning the MK Awards, an important music prize for Cape Town and the surrounding area, as best newcomer and for the best music video rounded off an all-round successful year.

The year 2015 was ushered in with the singles Julia and Caviar Dreams (with PHFAT) before the first album entitled Experience the Al Bairre Show With Al Bairre was released on November 20, 2015 . It consists of eight tracks, including the two pre-released singles Tunnels and Julia . The year 2016 was then largely spent with performances all over South Africa, at the South African Music Awards the music video by Caviar Dreams was nominated in the category Best Music Video. For the French young talent program for new musicians Midem Artist Accelerator , Al Bairre was also selected in 2016 as one of two African artists of the twelve finalists from originally almost 500 applicants.

In 2017 the band released three more singles with the singles Over and Over , Don't Say / Go Away and Just a Like Song , before the breakup was announced in April 2017 on February 21 of the same year on the band's Facebook page . This was justified with the success achieved over the five years of existence. The band's last concert took place on April 2nd, 2017 in Kirstenbosch .

style

In their music, the band combined conventional musical instruments of indie pop (guitar and drums) with instruments that are unusual for this genre, such as cellos, violins and ukuleles. The aim of the band was to transform the sound of the pieces into an "ice cream of orchestral sounds", an "ice cream of orchestral sounds". The members of Al Bairre described themselves as "an aggressively unfancy band from the Mother City, who have nice hair and like ugly things".

On the South African side of Red Bull , the band's style is described by Zia Haffejee as “combining string instruments with the more traditional guitars, drums and ukuleles on their chosen path of flowery, user-friendly pop rock” (“combines string instruments with the more traditional guitars, drums and ukuleles in their chosen path of flowery, user-friendly pop-rock ").
