Al Kiger

Alan "Al" Kiger (* 19 June 1932 in Muncie (Indiana) ; † 20th July 2013 ) was an American jazz - trumpet player , composer and arranger .

Kiger graduated from Muncie Burris High School, studied at the University of Michigan from 1950 to 1952, and then moved to Indiana University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1956. In addition to his studies, he participated in jam sessions with fellow students such as David Baker , Al Cobine , Jerry Coker and others. During this time the first recordings with Al Cobine and Jerry Coker were made.

In 1959/1960 he attended the Lennox School of Jazz in Massachusetts. During this time he became a member of the ensembles of his teacher George Russell . Kiger worked in the early 1960s on a total of eight albums by Russell (such as Stratusphunk ) and John Lewis ( Golden Striker ) with. For the next twenty years he worked as a studio musician, for Henry Mancini , Andy Williams and Johnny Mathis . From 1980 he played in Cincinnati as a trumpeter and arranger with the Blue Wisp Big Band , which was founded by John von Ohlen. In his later years, Kiger gave up the active music career and concentrated on composing and arranging.
