Alai (writer)

Alai ( Chinese  阿 来 , Pinyin Ālái , Tibetan ཨ་ ལེ་ Wylie A-le ; * 1959 in Barkam County of the Ngawa Autonomous District of the Tibetans, in the north of the Chinese province of Sichuan ) is a Tibetan-Chinese writer.

Alai was born in 1959 near Barkam in a Tibetan village. His father was a Tibetan while his mother was from the Hui minority. He received training as a Chinese teacher and worked briefly as a teacher after completing his training. In 1996 he moved to Chengdu and became editor-in-chief of the magazine 《科幻 世界》 ( Kē-huàn shìjiè , Science Fiction World ). Alai is married to a Han Chinese .

Alai published his first poem in 1982. Three years later, in 1985, he received a Tibetan literary award for his poem Zhenxiang ni xinling de chibang ( Glide the wings of your heart ). In 1989 he published a collection of short stories under the title 《旧 年 的 血迹》Jiùnián de xuèjì ( Bloodstains of the Bygone Years ). He became internationally known especially after he received the most prestigious Chinese literary prize, the Mao Dun Prize , in 2000 for his novel 《尘埃落定》Chén'āiluòdìng ( Falling Dust , German Red Poppy ) .
