He studied business administration until 1981 at Saarland University and Metz University . He was employed by Groupe Yves Rocher until 1994 , most recently as Vice President from 1991. Then he was regional managing director of the Paris - Dammartin branch at Aldi France until 1999, and from 1999 chairman of the board of Aldi Service Plus (ASP), the French market leader in catering supplies.

From 2000 he was also a member of the management of the Swiss ASP partner Bon Appetit Group , which was taken over by the REWE Group in 2003 , most recently as its CEO. From July 1, 2004, he was a member of the REWE management team in Cologne , and since 2006 CEO of the REWE Group.

In October 2010 he was appointed to the Karstadt Supervisory Board by Berggruen Holding and elected its chairman. On April 11, 2011, he resigned from this post with immediate effect. A few days later he publicly criticized Nicolas Berggruen and his plans to split Karstadt.

From the beginning of 2014, Caparros was also President of Core , a procurement alliance of European retail chains in which the Rewe Group was also represented. REWE left Core again in 2015 to enter into an alliance with E.Leclerc . Caparros asked the REWE supervisory board to terminate his mandate as CEO on June 30, 2017. The supervisory board complied with this request; At the beginning of July 2017, Lionel Souque became the new CEO of the REWE Group. Caparros switched to the clothing company C&A . On March 20, 2019, it was announced that he was leaving his chief position at C&A for health reasons; he had a heart attack in the fall of 2018.

Private

In September 2015, Caparros received German citizenship and gave up his French citizenship. He praised the German refugee policy as the “lighthouse of humanity in Europe” and is ashamed today to come from France.

He describes his leadership style as "tough, but only on the matter". At the same time, he considers emotions to be indispensable in his work - to like his environment and to be interested in his employees.

Alain Caparros is married, has three children and lives in Düsseldorf.
