Alain Germain

Alain Germain (* 1948 in Carentan , Manche department ) is a French writer , director , choreographer , painter , stage and costume designer .

Life

Alain Germain attended the École des Beaux-Arts (EBA) in Caen from 1964 to 1968 and then until 1970 the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris , from which he graduated with a degree in interior design. In 1972 he founded the Compagnie Alain Germain , with which he has since staged numerous opera and ballet productions at opera houses, theaters and museums.

He performed Claude Ballif's Minuit pour géants in 1977 at the Musée d'Art Moderne and his opera Dracoula in 1984 at the Théâtre de Paris . Other operas performed by him were by contemporary composers such as Ginette Keller , Isabelle Aboulker , Francine Aubin , Alain Margoni , Ichiro Nodaïra , Frédéric Durieux , Adrienne Clostre and Eric Tanguy .

In 1979 his Osteodráme with music by Bach, Mozart, Debussy and Louvier was performed at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (Paris) . In 1981 he performed L'incantation de Merseburg at the Musée National d'Art Moderne (and later in Basel and Bonn) . In the same year he worked with Andreas Jäggi as a set and costume designer for the performance of Mozart's Così fan tutte in Metz. In 1987 he staged Mozart's Requiem at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and worked with Jäggi as a costume designer for Franz Lehár's The Merry Widow in Montpellier.

The performance of Savants et la Révolution at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in La Vilette on the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution in 1989 was broadcast on the radio. In 1991 he realized Les Origines de l'Homme in the Musée en Herbe based on music by Frédéric Durieux . In the following year he performed Christoph Willibald Gluck's Iphigenie auf Tauris 2000 Iannis Xenakis ' Oresteïa at the Covent Garden Opera . In 2004 he realized the Phantom of the Opera in the Grand Théâtre as an exhibition and as a film concert with the screening of Rupert Julian's film and the accompanying music by Roy Budd .

On the 150th anniversary of the publication of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal , Germain wrote the text for a play at the Center d'Art in Orford, Canada. In the same year he designed the sets and costumes for open-air performances of Rossini's The Barber of Seville , directed by Julia Migenes . In 2008 the Musée National des Arts et Métiers held a retrospective of 40 years of Germain's work under the title Alain Germain, entre costumes et machines .
