Alan Francis Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke KG , GCB , OM , GCVO , DSO (born July 23, 1883 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre , France , † June 17, 1963 in Ferney Close, Hartley Wintney, Hants ) was a British field marshal during World War II .

At the beginning of the war he commanded the II. Corps, which was part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France. During the evacuation of the British troops via Dunkirk ( Operation Dynamo ) he was one of the unit leaders in charge.

In 1940 Brooke was named Commander in Chief of the British Home Forces . In 1941, he was appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff (Chief of the Army General Staff ) and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee . Brooke was the principal military advisor to Churchill , the War Cabinet, and the British allies in these roles . Brooke turned down the offer to take command of the British troops in North Africa in order to prevent, as he said, Churchill from leading the country into senseless military adventures.

On September 18, 1945 he was raised to the hereditary nobility with the title Baron Alanbrooke , of Brookeborough in the County of Fermanagh . On January 29, 1946, he was also the title Viscount Alanbrooke , of Brookeborough in the County of Fermanagh, bestowed. Both titles belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom . A hereditary seat in the House of Lords was associated with the titles .

In 1953 Brooke was at the coronation of Elizabeth II as Lord High Constable one of the Great Officers of State , who take on special tasks at the coronation.

One of his nephews was Basil Brooke, 1st Viscount Brookeborough , third Prime Minister of Northern Ireland .
