Alan Henry Brooke, 3rd Viscount Brookeborough KG (born June 30, 1952 ) is a Northern Irish peer , soldier and landowner . He is one of 92 hereditary peers who will remain in the House of Lords for life .

biography

Brooke, son of John Brooke, 2nd Viscount Brookeborough (1922-1987) and Rosemary Hilda Chichester (1926-2007), attended Harrow School in London and Millfield School in Somerset , and the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester .

In 1971 he joined the British Army , where he was employed with the 17th / 21st Lancers . In 1977 he was transferred to the Ulster Defense Regiment (UDR), which became the Royal Irish Regiment in 1992 . From 1980 to 1983 Brooke was co-commander of the 4th Battalion of the UDR. From 1988 to 1993 he was Major Colonel. In 1993 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Irish Regiment and in 1997 Honorary Colonel of the 4th / 5th. Battalion of the Royal Irish Rangers and remained so until 2008. He is President of the Co. Fermanagh Unionist Association and was an independent member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board from 2001 to 2006 . He has been a member of the National Employer Advisory Board (NEAB) since 2005.

From 1992 to 2001 he was the Non-Executive Director of the Green Park Healthcare Trust . Since 1995 he has been President of the Army Benevolent Fund Northern Ireland . From 1996 to 2001 he was President ( Chairman ) of the Basel International (Jersey) , since 2000 he has been a non-executive Director.

Brooke is a non-executive director of Basel Trust Corporation (Channel Islands) Ltd , which provides financial services. He is a member of the Trustee of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust . In 1987 he became Deputy Lieutenant of Co. Fermanagh . In 1995 he became high sheriff there .

Membership in the House of Lords

Brooke inherited the title of Viscount Brookeborough from his father in 1987 , as well as the then associated seat in the House of Lords . On February 3, 1988, he gave his inaugural address there. On the official website of the House of Lords, he lists Northern Ireland , agriculture, tourism , defense policy and health policy as political interests . He mentions the states of Europe and particularly Great Britain as states of particular interest .

From 1988 to 1997 he was a member of the EEC Agricultural Sub-Committee . From 1998 to 2002 Brooke was a member of the Select Committee on European Communities . During the same period he was also a member of the British Energy Industry and Transport sub-committee . Since 2007 he is a member of the Sub-Committee D .

He has been Lord-in-Waiting with Queen Elizabeth II since 1997. Although he lost his automatic right to sit in the House of Lords through the House of Lords Act 1999 , he remained there as one of the elected peers of the Crossbencher . He tends to be irregular on meeting days. On April 23, 2018 he was inducted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion .

Working in public

Brooke represented Elizabeth II as Lord-in-Waiting in place of Charles Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince of Wales and Camilla Mountbatten-Windsor, Duchess of Cornwall on the arrival of US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on their official state visit May 24, 2011.

Family and personal life

Brooke married Janet Elizabeth Cooke (daughter of JP Cooke, of Doagh ) on April 12, 1980 , who thereby received the courtesy title Viscountess Brookeborough. They operate Colebrooke Park in Brookeborough , County Fermanagh , Northern Ireland .

Since he has no children, the alleged title heir is his brother Christopher Arthur Brooke .

Significant family members included Field Marshal Alan Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke and Northern Ireland's third Prime Minister, Basil Brooke, 1st Viscount Brookeborough .
