Alan Meredith Williams

Alan Meredith Williams (born August 22, 1909 , † December 2, 1972 ) was a British diplomat . Among other things, he served as ambassador to Panama and Spain .

Life and activity

Williams was educated at Berkhamsted School and Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge . He then entered the British diplomatic service: on December 5, 1932, he was appointed Vice Consul on probation in San Francisco . On January 11, 1934, he was transferred to Colón in Panama. In the same year he was promoted to permanent vice-consul and on April 23, 1934 appointed regular vice-consul in Colon.

From December 7, 1935 to April 25, 1936, Williams served as executive vice-consul in Paris . On January 7, 1936, he was transferred to Hamburg , where he worked as Vice Consul until 1939. During these years he repeatedly represented the regular consul general as the acting consul general in 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939. After the outbreak of World War II , Williams was briefly interned by the German authorities and then deported across the border to Belgium . On November 6th he was appointed Vice Consul in Rotterdam , the Netherlands .

On May 29, 1940 Williams was transferred to Reykjavík , where he remained until 1943. During 1941 and 1942 he served repeatedly as the managing consul general. He then worked from May 8, 1943 at the British Mission in Dakar , before he was transferred to Léopoldville on July 31, 1941 . On February 1, 1944, he was appointed Chief Economic Representative there.

After the war ended, Williams was a member of the British Control Commission for Austria . As a result, he was appointed British consul in Vienna on May 19, 1945 . On June 5, 1947, he was transferred to Baghdad and from there on August 2, 1949 to the Foreign Office . At that time he was promoted to a Level 6 Officer and was appointed Deputy Consul General in New York on October 10, 1950 with the rank of Councellor . On August 21, 1953, he was transferred as Consul General in Tunis .

From 1956 to 1960, Williams held the post of Inspector of the Foreign Service Establishment of the Foreign Office in London

In 1964 Williams was appointed British Ambassador to Panama. He held this post until 1966. He then served as British ambassador to Spain from 1964 to 1966.

In 1946, Williams married Masha Pouschine, with whom he had a son, Lawrence, and a daughter, Elizabeth.
