Alar Karis (born March 26, 1958 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian biologist and non-party politician. He was elected the 6th President of the Republic of Estonia on August 31, 2021.

Previously, he was Professor of Developmental Biology at the University of Tartu , its Rector from 2007 to 2012, President of the Estonian Court of Auditors from 2013 to 2018 and Director of the Estonian National Museum from 2018 to 2021 .

education

Alar Karis attended the 2nd secondary school in Tartu from 1965 to 1976 (today's Miina Härma Gümnaasium ). From 1976 to 1981 he studied veterinary medicine at the Estonian Agricultural Academy (Eesti Põllumajanduse Akadeemia) . In 1987 the Academy of Sciences of the Belarusian SSR awarded him the candidate title (equivalent to a doctorate) in veterinary medicine with a focus on parasitology .

Scientific career

From 1981 to 1987 Karis was a research assistant at the Estonian Animal Breeding and Veterinary Institute (Eesti Loomakasvatuse ja Veterinaaria Instituut) . From 1987 to 1992 he worked at the Estonian Biocenter of the Estonian Academy of Sciences .

In the 1990s, after Estonian regained independence from the Soviet Union , his research stays abroad, in particular at the University of Hamburg (1991), the National Institute for Medical Research near London (1992/93) and the Erasmus University Rotterdam (1993 to 1998). Since then, the focus of his scientific work has been on molecular genetics . From 1996 to 1999 Karis worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology and at the Technology Center of the University of Tartu . In 1999 he took over the chair of zoology there .

From 2003 to 2007 Karis was the rector of the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences (Eesti Maaülikool) in Tartu. From 2005 to 2010 Karis was an associate professor, then until 2018 a full professor of developmental biology at the University of Tartu. In 2007 Karis was elected Rector of the University of Tartu, his term of office ended in June 2012.

Administrative controller and museum director

From 2013 to 2018 Karis was President of the Estonian Court of Auditors (Riigikontrolör) .

Karis has been the director of the Estonian National Museum in Tartu since April 2018 .

2021 presidential election

After long deliberations , the ruling coalition of the Reform Party and the Center Party agreed on August 22, 2021 to propose Karis for the election of the new president . In the first ballot on August 30, Karis, the only candidate, did not receive the required two-thirds majority in the secret ballot in the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ) . Therefore a second ballot took place on August 31st. Karis received the necessary majority with 72 votes and was elected to succeed Kersti Kaljulaid as President of the Republic of Estonia . He is scheduled to take up office on October 11, 2021.

Private life

Alar Karis has been married to the historian Sirje Karis (born Jädal, * 1956) since 1977 . She was the director of the Estonian History Museum and has headed the Tartu City Museum since 2018. The couple has three grown children.
