The Albersweiler Canal (also Albersweiler Canal ) was a seven-kilometer-long navigable canal between the gneiss quarries near Albersweiler and the city of Landau in the Palatinate , which ran parallel to the Queich , built in 1687/88 for the construction of the Landau Fortress . After completion of the fortress construction, it served as part of the Queich lines as a fortification on the north-eastern border of France and was used at the same time for the water supply of the city of Landau.

In 1874, sections of the canal were built over when the Landau – Zweibrücken railway was built. When Bundesstraße 10 between Landau and Annweiler was re- routed in 1975 , the canal was abandoned and major parts of it were destroyed. The preserved canal structures and the associated topography are protected as a cross-border monument zone in the area of the city of Landau and the district of Südliche Weinstrasse .

The partially or fully preserved canal structures include:

  • Canal as a body of water between Albersweiler and Birkweiler (about 30% of the total route)
  • northern embankment on about 40% of the canal route and partly the southern embankment
  • Discharge lock branching off from the Queich in Albersweiler
  • Canal bridge at the Siebeldingen lock over a filled canal
  • Parts of the Kreuzmühlschleuse in Landau
  • seven of the nine through structures ( aqueducts ) running under the canal
  • Washing area in Albersweiler
