life and work

Albert Borer, known as "Al", completed a commercial apprenticeship at Konsumverein Olten after finishing school . Because of his talent for drawing, he was already employed as an advertising artist during his apprenticeship. After completing his apprenticeship, Borer trained as a graphic designer with a specialty in fashion at the Basel School of Design in 1932 and worked in Basel as a graphic designer at Globus from the third semester onwards .

In 1935 he moved to Paris with Herbert Leupin . There they attended nude drawing lessons at the private school «École Paul Colin ». Borer took part in the poster competition for the "Paris Fair 1936". His contribution was awarded fourth place.

When he returned to Olten, Borer opened his own studio in 1936 and received numerous other orders from Ringier to design the covers of its fashion journals. This work made Borer known in the textile industry, which earned him further orders for large fashion houses. After the war he also worked for German clients, including Karstadt, for whom he designed advertising posters for twelve years.

With the advent of fashion photography , Borer went from advertising artist, commercial artist, graphic artist to advertising photographer in 1963. After an unsuccessful attempt to work with a former star photographer, Borer decided two years before his retirement to close his studio and work for the von Roll company in Solothurn in their advertising department. Since the department was closed after two years, Borer worked for the next ten years as a nude and portrait drawing teacher at the Migros Club School .
