Albert Claesz de Graeff (* around 1620 in Amsterdam ; † after 1667) was a Dutch admiral during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665–1667) . Albert Claesz came from a politically insignificant branch of the De Graeff family , the city lords of Amsterdam . His political orientation was characteristic of the family: on the one hand libertine and state-minded, on the other hand, if only to a limited extent, loyal to the Orange .

biography

Albert Claesz, son of Claes Jansz de Graeff, joined the Admiralty of Amsterdam as an officer at an early age . During the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-1654) he was the captain of various Dutch ships. In 1652 he took command of the ship Hollandia from Maarten de Graeff. Under Albert de Graeff, the ship had a crew of 90 men and 32 cannons. In the same year he led the Hollandia in the sea battle at Kentish Knock, which was a loss for the Dutch . In 1653 he was in the squadron of Admiral Witte de With and took part in the sea battle at Scheveningen with the ship (Morgen) Star . Afterwards De Graeff was under the command of Cornelis Tromp with whom he sailed to the Shetland Islands . In the following year he was again under the command of De Withs with his ship Hollandia. In 1653 De Graeff ran aground with the ship Morgen Star near St. Martin [?].

In 1659 his relative Cornelis de Graeff sent a fleet under Admiral Michiel de Ruyter to the Baltic States to operate there against the Swedish naval forces. Here Albert de Graeff was able to command the ship Marseveen as De Ruyter's top officer with a crew of around 200 men and 40 cannons. In the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667) De Graeff was in the Admiralsrange. In 1665 he took part as Schout-bij-Nacht ( Rear Admiral ) under Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam in the costly naval battle at Lowestoft . De Graeff himself commanded the ship Huis Tijdverdrijf with 58 cannons and a crew of 258.
