etymology

The name has its origins in the 15th and 16th centuries and refers to the function of the officer who is responsible for commanding the ship on behalf of the captain during the night watch when the captain is sleeping.

history

One of the first bearers of this rank was 1641 Michiel de Ruyter (1607–1676). In later times the responsibility of the Schout-bij-Nacht increased and then the commander of a squadron was usually given this rank.

In the 17th century , the Swedish Navy and the then Danish-Norwegian Navy took over this designation in the form of Schoutby Night and the Imperial Russian Navy as шаутбенахт ( Schautbenacht ). In 1724 the Russian rank was changed to the modern designation контр-адмирал ( Kontr-Admiral ), similarly then in 1771 in the Scandinavian fleets to Swedish Konteramiral or Danish Kontreadmiral and Norwegian Kontreadmiral .
