Albert Gallatin Blanchard
Albert Gallatin Blanchard (born September 10, 1810 in Charlestown , Massachusetts , † July 21, 1891 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was a brigadier general in the Confederate Army in the Civil War .
Life
Blanchard graduated from the Military Academy at West Point , New York in 1829 as the 26th of his class. One of his classmates was the future General Robert Edward Lee . As a lieutenant , he was transferred to the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, which was deployed from various locations on the frontier . He was then a recruiting officer and supported pioneering activities on the Sabine River . On October 1, 1840, he left the US Army as a first lieutenant. From 1840 to 1846 he worked as a merchant in New Orleans , Louisiana and was also the director of a public school from 1843 to 1845.
During the Mexican-American War , he served as Captain of the Louisiana Volunteers and took part in the Battle of Monterrey and the Siege of Vera Cruz . Blanchard was reinstated as a major in the regular army on May 27, 1847 and used in the 12th US Infantry Regiment. He said goodbye again after the end of the war on July 25, 1848. He worked for a few years as a surveyor and then for various railway companies.
In 1861, after the beginning of the Civil War, he was promoted to Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. After the war he became an engineer and returned to work as a surveyor.
