biography

Albert Herold was born in Pöhl and later moved to Dresden-Wachwitz, where he also died in 1974. He was best known for his documentary woodcuts , linocuts and pastels from the erection of large structures ( dams , bridges , power plants , TV tower Dresden ) and from work in large companies ( Maxhütte , Neptunwerft Rostock). His works were printed by the Lutz Wolfram printing company in Dresden.

The works of art were delivered in a high-quality folder with stamped letters. The title was the name of the respective construction site or the place where the pictures were taken. It contained six to nine woodcuts in A3 format on extra-hard paper. There were two different folders. One was bound like a book, while the other contained the pictures loosely. The former usually consisted of the sturdy cardboard folder itself with a cover sheet with a list of images printed on the back. The folders with the loose pictures also contained a sturdy cardboard cover sheet, and the normal cover sheet, like the drawings, lay loosely in the folder. All volumes were made in A3 format and some were hand-signed. The exact editions are not known. The artist did the cutting and signing himself. There were probably various pictures without a folder that were sold individually like a poster. Herold was later nicknamed "The Painter of Sosa ".
