Albert Hurny

Albert Hurny (born November 18, 1920 in Lauban ; † January 28, 2010 in Benz (Usedom) ) was a German writer .

Life

Hurny closed his school years with the intermediate certificate from, was locomotive repairman drafted and in the military service. He got into American captivity, from which he was released in 1946. After training as a teacher, he taught as a teacher in Garz on the island of Usedom until 1948 . In 1951 he became director of the Usedom City School. After studying German and history, he was appointed director of the central school in Benz, Labömitz district , in 1955 .

From 1960 he worked part-time as a writer and from 1968 freelance. From 1955 to 1995 he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists . Hurny was with Klaus Frühauf , one of the most important science fiction - writers in the GDR , friends.

Literary work

The non-fiction book Wanderfahrt auf Usedom was one of the first island books after 1945. Coherent descriptions of the landscape, illustrated with a variety of photos taken during his hikes and precise instructions for travelers, made this work a bestseller.

An adventure novel from the southern milieu, which he knew from his own experience from the time he was a prisoner of war, was published in 1965 - Under the Law of the South . In 1968 the young people's book Magdalena followed, which is part of the agricultural sector and has been reprinted countless times. In many of his novels and stories he critically examined the social conditions without, however, questioning the GDR's claim to want to build a “just, humane society”. He also wrote novels with a historical background, such as The Judgment of St. Julian's (1982), a historical novel about Francis Drake .

His second novel Under the Law of the South (1967) was translated into Polish by Maria Kłos-Gwizdalka in 1970 under the title Prawo Południa . In addition, the novel was integrated into the popular series Exciting Told by the New Life publishing house in Berlin .

Albert Hurny was one of the most popular authors of his time in the GDR.
