Albert Levy

Albert Levy (born December 10, 1862 in Cologne , † March 13, 1922 in Berlin ) was a pioneer of social work in Germany.

Life

Albert Levy was a brother of the bankers Louis Hagen and Carl Hagen as well as Emma Rheinhold, the wife of the sculptor Hugo Rheinhold , and Fanny Kempner (1860–1937), the wife of the lawyer Maximilian Kempner . From 1882 Levy worked at the station aid for Russian-Jewish emigrants. In 1889 he obtained his doctorate in Berlin. phil. On November 6, 1892, he was a founding member of the German Society for Ethical Culture in Berlin. In 1893 he was involved in the establishment of the welfare archive. In 1899, after the death of Jeanette Schwerin , he took over the management of the information center of the German Society for Ethical Culture, which he transformed in 1906 into an independent association, Zentrale für Privatworge. From 1900 he worked as a citizen's deputy in the municipal poor directorate of Berlin and in the central committee of the German Association for Poor Care and Charity in Frankfurt am Main . From 1913 he was a member of the municipal foundation deputation in Berlin.

After the First World War Levy was active in the Central Committee for Foreign Aid and in the committees of the German Center for Youth Welfare as well as in the Advisory Board and in Expert Commission II of the Center for People's Welfare. Levy tried to get the welfare organizations to work together in a systematic manner and spoke out against holding charity festivals.
