Albert Mudenda Muchanga (born May 21, 1959 in Mbilu , Choma District , Zambia ) is a Zambian politician and diplomat. As Commissioner for Trade and Industry, he is currently a member of the ten-person commission of the African Union .

Life

Albert Muchanga was born as the eldest of three children to his parents in the village of Mbilu in the Southern Province . When he was four years old, his mother died and the family moved to Southern Rhodesia , where his father († 2002) worked for the Supersonic company. Muchanga attended the Linda Secondary School, Kabimba, Coillard, Livingstone Day and Monze Secondary School , among others . He studied at the University of Zambia (UNZA), where he obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration. He is married and has three biological daughters. He also raised five other children with his wife, Racheal, four of whom were orphans of his brother, who died in 1996.

Career

During his career, Muchanga has worked as State Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs in his home country Zambia and as Ambassador to Ethiopia and Brazil . He was also the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). His term of office as Commissioner for Trade and Industry began on January 30, 2016 and is scheduled to end on January 30, 2020. In this capacity, Muchanga took part in the conference of South-South Cooperation , a UN- supported initiative of the countries of the global South , in Buenos Aires in March 2019 . On the fringes of the conference there was also a meeting between Muchanga and Achim Steiner , the head of the UN Development Program (UNDP).
