Life

Albert Sidney Fleischman was born as Avron Zalmon Fleischman . He is of Russian Jewish descent. At the age of two, the family moved to San Diego , California. In his childhood, Fleischman was an avid magician who learned all his tricks from books and later presented them on the show stage. While still in high school, he toured California and performed in several nightclubs. With Between Cocktails , Fleischman published his first book at the age of 19. He later graduated from San Diego State University . His studies were interrupted by the Second World War. He served on a destroyer in the Pacific. After the war he resumed his studies and graduated with a degree in English. While still a student, he published his first novel, The Straw Donkey Case . He then worked as a journalist.

Over the next 15 years, he used all of his wizardry, Pacific operations, and journalistic experience to write a number of adult books. With Blood Alley , Counterspy Express and The Deadly Companions , three of his novels were filmed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After his three children were born, Fleischman began writing stories for them. His first children's book, Mr. Mysterious & Company , an adventure story of a traveling wizarding family, was published in 1962. The book was published four years later under the title Firma Zaubermeister and Co. by Union-Verlag.

Fleischman was married to his wife Betty from 1951 until their death in 1993. They had three children together, including the writer Paul Fleischman . On March 17th, Fleischman died just one day after his 90th birthday of complications from his cancer .
