The Yellow Stream (Original Title: Blood Alley ) is an American adventure film from 1955 , in which John Wayne and Lauren Bacall are directed by William A. Wellman in the lead roles . In keeping with the zeitgeist, the film has strong anti-communist traits.
action
The American trade captain Tom Wilder is stranded in Red China and imprisoned. In prison he vegetates until he is rescued by a Chinese named Big Han and hidden in a village. The villagers do not help without ulterior motives: They hope that Wilder will help them with their planned escape to Hong Kong , as they only have a decrepit paddle steamer and practically no sea experience. Wilder also met Cathy Grainger, the daughter of a missionary doctor, there.
After various little adventures, he managed to escape down the Yellow Current and through the strait between the mainland and the island of Formosa , which bears the name Blood Alley, to Hong Kong.
background
Originally supposed to play the lead role, Robert Mitchum was fired by Wellman after an argument. Gregory Peck was not interested, and Humphrey Bogart was too expensive.
After there was no longer any male leading actor up for discussion, John Wayne, who was actually producing the film with his newly founded company Batjac , took on the title role and in some cases the direction.
The recordings mainly took place in a small fishing village in the San Francisco Bay .
criticism
Critics were reluctant to respond to the film. It was criticized that the script was based very much on the hit film African Queen . The obligatory love story between Wayne and Bacall was also missing the spark. The fact that almost all of the leading “Chinese” roles were played less convincingly by Western stars, including Anita Ekberg, who is known as the so-called “breast miracle”, also contributed to the film's low success. The lexicon of international films says: "John Wayne as a hero in the Far East in a politically implausible colportage from the Cold War era ."
