Albert Zirkler

Albert Franz Zirkler (born September 5, 1891 in Dresden , † August 5, 1971 in Radebeul ) was a German teacher, folklorist and dialect researcher.

Life

After attending the teachers' college in Dresden, the city of his birth, he first became a secondary school teacher in Meissen , then in Dresden, where he held office until 1945. After the end of the Second World War he went to Radebeul as a teacher, where he worked until he reached retirement age in 1956.

In 1927, Zirkler published the “Hausbuch Saxon dialect poetry” in Leipzig, which significantly promoted the maintenance of dialect in Saxony and contributed to the upgrading of the Saxon dialects. Together with Adolf Spamer , he published the series of publications "Saxon Folklore" from 1928 at Verlag Brandstetter and founded the "Free Association for Folklore Dresden" with Spamer and other folklorists in 1929 , which was renamed "Verein für Volkskunde Dresden" three years later . He headed this association until it was dissolved in 1945.

During the time of National Socialism , Zirkler became the main consultant for dialect in the Heimatwerk Sachsen , Gau commissioner for dialect in the State Office for Folk Research and Maintenance in the Gau Saxony of the Nazi Teachers' Association , specialist advisor for dialect in the state management of the Reich Chamber of Literature at the regional culture warden in Gau Saxony and head of the lecturer in the Gau Saxony at the regional training office of the NSDAP in the district of Saxony. He was revered as the trustee of Saxon dialect literature.

After the end of the Second World War he continued to work on research on (Upper) Saxon dialects, became a member of the German Writers' Association and a member of the Dresden District Committee on Folklore in the GDR Cultural Association .

In the Soviet occupation zone , the writings compiled by Zirkler Sudetenland - enslaved and liberated! (Merseburger, Leipzig 1939) and the history of Grunas and his school (Hans-Schemm-Schule, Dresden 1940), which he also edited , was placed on the list of literature to be sorted out.
