Alberto Iñurrategi
Alberto Iñurrategi (born November 3, 1968 in Aretxabaleta ) is a Spanish mountaineer . After Juanito Oiarzabal, he is the second Spaniard and the tenth person in total to have managed to climb all eight-thousanders , i.e. all 14 mountains on earth with a height of over 8,000 meters .
Iñurrategi stood on his first eight-thousander, the 8,485-meter-high Makalu , on September 30, 1991. In the following year, he climbed the highest mountain on earth, Mount Everest for the first time . On May 16, 2002, after a little over ten and a half years, Iñurrategi completed his eight-thousander collection with the 8,091-meter-high Annapurna . He was 33 years and six months old at the time, making him the youngest graduate of the 14-eight-thousander program. This record has now been broken by Mingma Sherpa and his brother Chhang Dawa . Iñurrategi reached all eight-thousand-meter peaks without the aid of bottled oxygen, which only three other climbers had succeeded before him: the South Tyrolean Reinhold Messner , the Swiss Erhard Loretan and Iñurrategi's compatriot Oiarzabal. Alberto Iñurrategi climbed 12 of the 14 eight-thousanders together with his brother Felix; he died on the descent from the 12th summit, the Gasherbrum II .
