Alberto Torres

Alberto de Seixas Martins Torres (born November 26, 1865 in Itaboraí , † March 29, 1917 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian politician , journalist , lawyer and social thinker who dealt with national unity and the organization of society in Brazil .

Torres was a member of the Constituent Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro from March 1, 1892, and was a member of the Legislative Assembly the following year. In 1894 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress as a member of his home state . Prudente de Morais , third President of the Republic of Brazil, appointed Torres its Minister of Justice and Interior from 1896 to 1897, from 1897 to 1900 Torres was Governor of Rio de Janeiro and from 1901 to 1909 Minister of the Supreme Court of Brazil .

From his point of view, socialism and individualism were incompatible with the reality of Brazil and were causes of social disintegration. He wanted to objectively understand Brazilian society in order to diagnose its problems and find pragmatic solutions; In his view, this was possible with a strong state that could guide change.

His best known writings include O problema nacional brasileiro (1912), A organização nacional (1914) and As fontes da vida no Brasil (1915).

His ideas influenced the Brazilian Revolution of 1930 and the 1964 coup .
