The Albertsons Stadium is a college football - stadium on the campus of Boise State University in the US American city Boise in the state of Idaho . It was named Bronco Stadium until 2014 , before the Albertsons supermarket chain acquired the naming rights. The stadium is home to the Boise State Broncos, the university's NCAA college football team, who play in the Mountain West Conference . The stadium is known for its blue artificial turf, which was first installed in 1986.

location

The stadium is located to the east of the Boise State University campus on the Boise River at an altitude of approximately 820 m above sea level.

story

The Boise State Broncos have been playing at their current location since 1940, which was previously Boise Airport . From 1950 to 1969 there was a stadium with a wooden grandstand that held 10,000 spectators. When the Broncos were accepted into the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1969, construction of a new stadium began. On September 11, 1970, the new stadium was opened with the game of the Broncos against the Chico State Wildcats . Boise State won the game 49:14 in front of 14,028 spectators. The stadium cost $ 2.2 million to build. The stadium has been expanded four times since it opened, most recently in 2012.

In 1986 the stadium received its famous blue artificial turf, for which the then Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier had successfully campaigned. Bleymaier was dissatisfied with the cost of a new playing surface, which he thought was too high for a new green artificial turf not to be a visible change. Boise State hoped the blue field would give Boise State an additional home advantage and more attention for college.

In June 2014, Boise State sold the stadium's naming rights to the Albertsons supermarket chain for the next 15 years for $ 12.5 million . Of this, 9 million went to the university itself and 3.5 million to the marketing company Learfield Sports , which is responsible for marketing the Boise State Broncos.

On October 12, 2019, a new attendance record was set in the stadium. 36,902 spectators saw the Broncos' 59:37 win over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors .

Trivia

Some other high schools and lesser-known colleges accepted the idea of Boise State and also use play areas with other colors, including the best known are the gray field of Eastern Michigan University , the red field of the Eastern Washington University and the purple-gray-striped artificial turf of the University of Central Arkansas . In 2009, Boise State registered the blue playing surface with the United States Patent and Trademark Officeas a trademark that has been valid since 2010 for all playing fields that are not green. This means that other teams that want to play on a non-green field require approval from Boise State. The National Football League (NFL) decided in 2011 that all NFL stadiums must have a green playing surface.

Due to the blue color, the stadium was nicknamed Smurf Turf (English for smurf turf). The name The Blue is common in Boise . It also happens that geese mistake the field for a lake and land on it.
