The German entrepreneurial family Albrecht built up the discount group Aldi (Albrecht-Discount) in the post-war period and thus became the richest family in Germany .

Beginnings of the Albrecht entrepreneurial family from 1913 to 1945

Karl Albrecht Sr. (1886–1943), the father of Theo (1922–2010) and Karl Albrecht (1920–2014), was a trained baker until he had to give up this work for health reasons (baker's asthma). In the spring of 1913 he started his own business as a bread trader and his wife Anna Albrecht (née Siepmann) opened a corner shop in Essen-Schonnebeck (Huestraße 89) on April 10, 1913 under the name of her husband .

Raised to the discounter group from 1945 to today

The sons Karl and Theo took over the family business in 1945. They expanded more and more and in 1953 opened the first regional warehouse with an office building in Essen-Schonnebeck. In 1955 the then Albrecht KG already had 100 branches (all in North Rhine-Westphalia). For unknown reasons, the Albrecht brothers decided to go their separate ways in 1961 and split the company into Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. 1961, there were already 300 branches in West Germany with a turnover of 90 million DM. At that time there were already two separate central administrations with regional warehouses (from Theo Albrecht in Herten, from Karl Albrecht in Mülheim an der Ruhr). Theo Albrecht took over the northern branches and Karl Albrecht the southern ones. The Ruhr formed the border . In 1962, the Albrecht brothers opened the first Aldi store (today's character as a pure discounter).

Theo Albrecht junior is the only member of the Albrecht family who is still active in the Aldi discounter. Aldi-Nord and Aldi-Süd are run exclusively by non-family managers .

Ownership structure and shareholders

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd are wholly owned by family foundations . In 1973, Karl Albrecht founded the Siepmann Foundation , which holds 100% of Aldi Süd. In the same year, Theo Albrecht established the Markus Foundation for Aldi Nord . The Markus Foundation is the majority shareholder of Aldi-Nord with 61% . The remaining 39% are held in equal shares (19.5% each) by the Lukas Foundation and the Jakobus Foundation. These two foundations are owned by members of the Theo Albrecht junior and Babette Albrecht family.
