Albrecht Böttcher

Albrecht Böttcher (born December 29, 1954 in Oberwiesenthal ) is a German mathematician who deals with functional analysis .

Böttcher went to an elite remedial class at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt as a student from 1971 to 1973 and won a silver medal at the 1973 Mathematics Olympiad in Moscow . After his military service, he studied from 1975 to 1979 at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt with Bernd Silbermann . From 1980 he continued his studies at the University of Rostov- on- Don , where he received his doctorate on Wiener-Hopf integral operators in 1984 under V. Dybin (candidate title). From 1984 he was a research assistant in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In 1987 he completed his habilitation there and became a lecturer in 1990 and professor for analysis in Chemnitz in 1992 . In 1992 he received the Alfried Krupp Prize for Young University Teachers and in 1997, together with Juri Karlowitsch (Karlovich), won the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans in Spain.

Böttcher dealt with operator algebras and especially with Toeplitz operators and Toeplitz matrices , about which he wrote a standard work with Silbermann.
