Albrecht Friedrich May (born October 10, 1773 , † May 3, 1853 in Bern ) was a Swiss politician , secretary and diplomat .

Life

May studied law in Germany and in 1798 became secretary of the Helvetic Directory . In 1799 and 1802 he traveled to Paris for diplomatic missions , and in 1802, as Commissioner General of the Canton of Léman, put down the Bourla Papey uprising. In 1802 he became governor of the Canton of Zurich . In 1803 he traveled to Italy and trained as an advocate . From 1804 to 1815 he was senior loan commissioner . From 1814 to 1846 he was the Bernese Grand Councilor .

May was an opponent of the restoration and the annexation of the diocese of Basel to Bern. From 1816 to 1823 he was chief magistrate in Courtelary . From 1827 to 1837 he was the Bernese state clerk .
