Life

Albrecht the Proud was the son and successor of Otto the Rich . His mother was Margravine Hedwig von Meißen († 1203), who is considered the founder of the Wettiner monastery. He married in 1186 in Aussig Sophie , daughter of the Premyslid Friedrich of Böhmen .

Since Albrecht's father did not intend to appoint his brother Dietrich as heir of the country , but rather his brother , Albrecht took up arms and took his father prisoner in 1188. Although he had to release it on the orders of Emperor Frederick I , he enforced the recognition of his right of inheritance and followed his father in the margravate in 1190 .

He accompanied Emperor Heinrich VI. to Italy , but soon hurried home to secure his country against his brother Dietrich, who had returned from Palestine and who, supported by his father-in-law, Landgrave Hermann von Thuringia , made claims to the mark. Defeated at Reveningen (probably Röblingen am See ), Albrecht, disguised as a monk , escaped with difficulty to Leipzig and hurried to appease the emperor's anger, which had been awakened again by the renewal of the brotherly feud, to Italy, but without achieving his intention .

His death put an end to the continuation of the fratricidal struggle. This overtook him on June 24, 1195 on the way from Freiberg to Meißen in Krummenhennersdorf. It is believed that he was poisoned.

Burial place

His body was buried in the Altzella monastery church , the house monastery of the Wettins. His grave slab has been preserved and can now be found next to those of his parents, the monastery donor Hedwig and Otto the Rich in the mausoleum in the monastery park.
