Nightmares (Stephen King)

The book nightmares is a writer Thomas Williams dedicated collection of 24 short stories by Stephen King from the year 1993 . In the English original, this collection was published under the title Nightmares and Dreamscapes . It is King's third collection of short stories after night shift and blood.

Only the first 12 stories are in the paperback version. The remaining short stories were published as a paperback under the title Abgrund .

' Dolan's Cadillac' (English: Dolan's Cadillac ) In this revenge story, the eponymous Dolan and his Cadillac are buried alive in the desert. King describes his difficulties with this story because he had to do a lot of research for it.

' The end of the whole mess' (Engl .: The End of the Whole measurement ) A child prodigy invents an agent that can reduce aggression in every living being, and finds a way to vaccinate the entire human race with it. Life becomes paradise on earth - until the side effects set in and all people die of dementia . The story was filmed as an episode in the US TV series Nightmares & Dreamscapes: Based on the Stories of Stephen King .

' Kinderschreck' (English: Suffer the Little Children ) Miss Sidley's world turns upside down when she realizes that her students are aliens. To save the world, she decides to kill the children.

' Der Nachtflieger' (English: The Night Flier ) The journalist Richard Dees smells the story of his life and clings to the heels of the "Nachtflieger", a serial killer who flies from airfield to airfield in his small plane, one murder victim after another leaves behind. When Dees has almost caught up with him, the killer suddenly stands before him as a vampire. The story served as a template for the motion picture Stephen King's The Night Flier .

' Popsy' In the collection's second vampire story, Biggs Sheridan has to kidnap children to pay off his betting debts. He already had some experience in this when he came across a boy who was not at all normal. He yells for his Popsy and keeps telling Sheridan that his grandfather would save him. When Popsy finally lands on Sheridan's moving car and the boy's canine teeth grow longer, he knows that he is in the middle of a vampire story. But with no happy ending for him. Because the character "Popsy" is none other than the night flyer himself.

' It grows one over the head' (Engl .: It grows on you ) After Needful Things look back King again to Castle Rock, but does without a specific act.

' Chattery Teeth ' (English: Chattery Teeth ) A hitchhiker is bothering Bill, but luckily Bill has just bought rattling teeth for his son in a joke shop. When the car lands on the roof in an accident and the hitchhiker attacks Bill with the knife, they develop a life of their own and attack the hitchhiker.

' Dedication' (Engl .: Dedication ) Believing savor the delights of the glory of a rich man for her son eats a maid in a hotel whose semen from the bed sheets. Editor Douglas E. Winter cautioned readers about King's most unsavory story.

' Der Rasende Finger' (English: The Moving Finger ) Howard Mitla leads a lonely fight against a finger that grows out of his sink and gets longer and longer. And if the finger is that long, where and what is the rest then?

' Sneakers' (English: Sneakers ) The story of a public haunted toilet in which a dead man in sneakers is still up to mischief.

' Damn good band have here' (Engl .: You Know They Got A Hell Of A Band ) A couple comes off the road and lands in Rock 'n Roll Heaven, a small town in the late rock stars like Buddy Holly or Elvis Presley lead a ghost life. The couple and many others involuntarily stranded become a captivated audience in the truest sense of the word. With this story, King answered his own question as to why so many rock stars actually died so early. ' Home delivery' (Engl .: Home Delivery where) In a world Zombies have taken over the rule, must Maddie Pace bring their child themselves to the world and fight her undead husband. King is a fan of George Romero's zombie films and originally made this contribution to the Book of the Dead collection . The story is one of six selected for The Secretary of Dreams special issue .

' Rainy season' (Engl .: Rainy Season ) Every seven years it rains frogs in Willow, Maine , and each time has a married couple to serve as victims. This story ended one of his few writer's block, according to King himself. The story is one of six selected for The Secretary of Dreams special issue .

' My pretty pony' (Engl .: My Pretty Pony ) In this part of an aborted novel King can tell the main character on the nature of time.

' Sorry, properly connected' (Engl .: Sorry, Right Number ) Original Screenplay (for the series Tales from the Darkside ), in which a woman by phoning journey with itself.

' The Ten O'Clock People' (Engl .: The Ten O'Clock People ) This refers to here smokers who congregate at ten o'clock to smoke outside public buildings. Some of them can suddenly see aliens because of the nicotine - and arm themselves for a fight.

' Crouch End' A couple gets lost in the Crouch End neighborhood of London and falls into a nightmare inspired by HP Lovecraft's works. King himself got lost in Crouch End on the way to his friend Peter Straub . Filmed as an episode in the US TV series Nightmares & Dreamscapes: Based on the Stories by Stephen King .

' The Fifth Quarter' (Engl .: The Fifth Quarter ) This gangster story of a torn into four parts treasure map is the only one that Stephen King under the pseudonym John Swithen wrote. Filmed as an episode in the US TV series Nightmares & Dreamscapes: Based on the Stories by Stephen King .

' The House on Maple Street " (Engl .: The House on Maple Street ) A family house turned slowly and only by the children noticed in a spaceship. The children plan quickly and ensure that only the hated stepfather is in the house when the space launch takes place. King wrote this story for his children.

' The case of the doctor' (Engl .: The Doctor's Case ) In this homage to Sherlock Holmes solves Doctor Watson in case. First published in the collection The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes .

' Umney's Last Case' (Engl .: Umney's Last Case ) The homage to Raymond Chandler was first published only on the Internet and by his own admission Kings favorite story of the band. Even before King himself appeared in The Dark Tower , he wrote this story about an author who intrudes into one of his novels to play the main character. He wants to take on the role of his novel detective Umney and banishes him to the real world. Filmed as an episode in the US TV series Nightmares & Dreamscapes: Based on the Stories by Stephen King .

' Head down' (Engl .: Head Down ) A non-fictional story about baseball.

Stephen King wrote his own notes for each story in this collection, which provide information about the process of its creation. In his introduction, King goes into detail on his lifelong fascination with the supernatural.
