Albuca batteniana is a plant of the genus Albuca in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet batteniana honors the South African botanical artist and teacher Auriol Batten (* 1918).

description

Albuca batteniana is an evergreen plant . Their individual, egg-shaped, above-ground and rarely underground bulbs have a length of 5 centimeters and are 3 centimeters wide. The fleshy, green onion scales are clipped at their tips. The fleshy roots have a diameter of up to 2 millimeters. The dark green, bare leaves form a rosette . They are elongated, linearly narrowed, runny and soft and succulent . Their leaf blades are 10 to 30 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide. The tip of the leaf is pointed.

The inflorescence bears spread grapes with a length of up to 80 centimeters. The flower stem is up to 25 centimeters long and measures 6 to 10 millimeters in diameter at its base. The green and white, pointed bracts are 4 inches long and 1.3 inches wide. Their edges are translucent. The upright flowers are petiolate. The flower stalk at the base of the inflorescence is up to 12 inches long. Above this it becomes shorter and finally measures up to 3.5 centimeters. The elongated, hood-shaped tepals are white and have a green central stripe. The outer tepals are 3 to 4.2 inches long and 0.7 inches wide, the inner ones have a length of 2.5 to 3 inches and are also 0.7 inches wide. The white, 1.5 to 2 centimeters long stamens are flattened at their base. The elongated anthers are movable. The outer anthers are 4 millimeters long and 1 millimeter wide, the inner 7 millimeters long and 2.5 millimeters wide. The blunt triangular ovary is 8 to 12 millimeters long. The stylus has a length of 1 to 1.3 centimeters. The three-lobed scars are white. The flowering period extends from spring to autumn.

The fruits contain flat, shiny seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Albuca batteniana is widespread on steep field walls in the South African province of Eastern Cape in the Bushveld Valley .

The first description by Olive Mary Hilliard and Brian Laurence Burtt was published in 1985.

A synonym is Ornithogalum battenianum (Hilliard & BLBurtt) JCManning & Goldblatt (2004).
