The Aldford Iron Bridge is a road bridge that leads the Buerton Approach from the area of the village of Aldford across the River Dee to Eaton Hall , the country residence of the Duke of Westminster about 6 km south of Chester in Cheshire , England .
The bridge was planned for Robert Grosvenor, 2nd Earl Grosvenor , later 1st Marquess of Westminster, by Thomas Telford and cast by William Hazledine in one of his ironworks in 1824 and built on site. The construction of the bridge was part of Robert Grosvenor's remodeling of Eaton Hall and its parks at the time.
The cast iron bridge has a wide segment arch with a span of 50 m, which is supported on massive abutments made of yellowish sandstone. There are numerous vertical and diagonal struts on the arched girders to support the roadway girder. The gaps are covered by cast iron ornaments made of circles and arches, which largely obscure the view of the interior of the construction. In contrast, the cast iron railing consists of vertical bars. In the lower third, the railing is designed as a dog railing, the bars of which are half as far apart.
The bridge has been a Grade I listed monument since 1952 .
