Alejandro Otero (born March 7, 1921 in El Mateco , Bolívar , † August 13, 1990 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan sculptor , painter and cultural organizer.

Life

Otero studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas de Caracas from 1939 to 1945. After completing his studies, he traveled to New York and Paris , where he put the focus of his work on a renewal of Cubism , especially with his series with the name "Cafeteras". During his stay in Paris, he and other artists founded the group Los Disidentes , which published a magazine of the same name. The group primarily dealt with the demand for a renewal of the understanding of art, especially in the art schools of Venezuela, away from realism to the abstract. This cafetera series became famous for an exhibition in Washington, DC in 1948 , since they served Otero as a transition to realism and began a new era in Venezuelan painting. Toward the end of his life, he designed many monumental public art exhibitions in many American cities.

On August 14, 1990, the Museo Alejandro Otero was opened in Caracas in his memory. It not only houses Otero's personal writings and photographs, but also exhibits works by 105 national and international artists.
