Aleksandar Rakić (born February 6, 1992 in Vienna ) is an Austrian MMA fighter of Serbian descent who is currently competing in the light heavyweight division of the US organization Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

life and career

Start of career and first MMA fight

Aleksandar Rakić was born on February 6, 1992 as the son of a bus driver from the Socialist Republic of Serbia who had settled in Vienna. He grew up in Vienna-Ottakring as one of three children (a brother and a sister) and started kickboxing in 2005 when he was 13 years old . As such, he worked his way up over the years and became, among other things, the national champion of Vienna. He also appeared briefly as a boxer and completed three official fights. After kickboxing and boxing had become "too boring" for him and he "wanted more", Rakić switched to mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2011 . Up to this change he is said to have already been in action in around 40 official kickboxing matches. On October 15, 2011, the Serbian-born fighter played his first MMA fight at the Rock the Cage 2 event in Greifswald . However, Rakić lost it after a time of 4:34 minutes in the first round against Christian Radke from Greifswald by giving up.

Fights in Germany and Austria

Rakić, who lives in Brigittenau , already played his second MMA fight on February 4th, 2012 at New Talents 15 in Erfurt and won it after 1:42 minutes in the first round through a TKO over Carsten Lorenz . At Iron Fist: Vendetta 3 on March 18, 2012 in Vienna, it was again a TKO that was enough for a win after a time of 4:30 minutes in the second round against Richard Longhimo . In his third fight that year he was also successful against the experienced László Czene , who mostly appears alternately as a boxer and MMA fighter. At WFC: Challengers 3 on June 3, 2012 in Vienna, Rakić was again victorious in the first round and scored his first knockout victory with a head kick .

In the following year Rakić, who had already participated in the Amateur World Championship in Mixed Martial Arts in Las Vegas and trained with the successful Alexander Gustaffson in his home country Sweden , only played one official fight. At Vendetta: Rookies 2 on July 6, 2013 in Vienna, he was able to force his opponent Peter Rozmaring to give up after a time of 1:32 minutes in the first lap using the North-South Choke . At the HG: Heimgala 2 on September 13, 2014, Rakić was only able to prevail against his Hungarian opponent Norbert Peter through a TKO shortly before the end of round 1 . Towards the end of the year he also took part in the Final Fight Championship , where on December 6, 2014, he played a long fight against Marcin Prachnio . Only after 3:00 minutes was the native of Vienna able to prevail against the Poles in round 3 and won through a TKO.

Rakić came to a quick end in his subsequent MMA fight against Martin Batur from Croatia in the course of the Austrian Fight Challenge 1 on June 20, 2015 in Vienna. After just 26 seconds, a left hook from Rakić led to a knockout in the first round. As the third Austrian after Nandor Guelmino and Mairbek Taisumov , Rakić , who was repeatedly thrown back in his career by two knee operations, received a contract with the US organization Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), with which he signed for four fights over the next two years. In preparation for his UFC career, Rakić, who was trained as a hotel specialist in his home country but later worked briefly as a warehouse worker , completed a fight at the Austrian Fight Challenge 5 against the Brazilian Sergio Souza . In the first round, Rakić was able to prove himself against his opponent with a TKO.

Debut in the UFC

On September 2, 2017, Rakić made his official UFC debut at Gym 23 , a leading martial arts center and one of the best training facilities for mixed martial arts in Vienna's 23rd district. At the UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Struve in Rotterdam he faced the experienced Brazilian Francimar Barroso in the light heavyweight division . When there was still no winner after three rounds, the points assessment (unanimous decision) decided in favor of the Austrian. On February 24, 2018, Rakić would be at UFC on Fox: Emmett vs. Stephens had been set for a fight against Gadzhimurad Antigulov in Orlando , but could not deny this fight because on February 7, 2018 the injury-related loss of his Russian opponent was announced and the fight was canceled. Instead, on the occasion of the UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Smith his next official UFC fight on July 22, 2018 in Hamburg . Here he met the so far undefeated American Justin Ledet , against whom he delivered a technically clearly better fight. When, after three rounds, there was again no winner, the points evaluation again decided unanimously in favor of the Serbian-born athlete. Rakić dominated with 263 strokes on Ledet, who had just brought it to 28 strokes, clearly and set a new UFC record in the light heavyweight division. On December 8, 2018, the Austrian, whose running-in music is the song Ready for War by 50 Cent , played at UFC 231: Holloway vs. Ortega his third UFC fight where he met American MMA fighter Devin Clark . With a TKO after 4:05 minutes, Rakić was able to win the fight in Toronto in the first round. During his time in the United States, Rakić trained with the renowned American Top Team . His next win was against Jimi Manuwa ( Jimi Manuwa ). He defeated the Englishman with an outstanding left head kick in the first round.
