The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a German fairy tale film from 2017 based on the motifs of the ballad The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , and was produced for the ZDF series Märchenperlen . Unlike most of the film adaptations in the series, the film was a co-production by ZDF and mdr . The first broadcast of the film took place on December 24, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. on ZDF. It was shown for the first time by mdr on April 2, 2018.

action

The beggarly Valentin desperately wants to become a magician. So it is a good thing that the magician Ambrosius just needs an apprentice. Valentin is certain that he is exactly the right person for this job. In the exam he actually shows his extraordinary talent, but he is tricked by Katrina, the only competitor, and thus does not get the position as an apprentice to the magician of the royal court.

Instead he finds accommodation in the town's pharmacy and becomes an apprentice to the old master Zacharias. He was also a great magician, but has renounced magic because a magic went completely wrong for him and only brought bad luck. Much to Valentine's chagrin, Zacharias only instructs him in the teaching of herbs and medicine and not in magic, as he had hoped.

Thus, Valentin decides to learn magic on his own - in the process he comes across secrets which he tries to solve together with Katrina. The two get into adventures that can end badly for both of them.

production

The film was produced by Kinderfilm GmbH for ZDF and mdr. The recordings took place from March 7th to April 5th, 2017 in the old town of Görlitz , in the landscape park of Bad Muskau and in the Kromlauer Park of Gablenz .

The music was recorded under the direction of Bernhard Wünsch with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra .

criticism

The film was mostly received very positively by the critics:

Focus Online writes: “In addition to the rhyme, the landscape images that director Frank Stoye integrated into the film and the 70 minute film music by Mathias Rehfeldt create a special magic. Both give the film a kind of Lord of the Rings flair that is often missed in the German fantasy genre. "

Tittelbach.tv writes: “The fairy tale specialists Kömmerling and Brinx were inspired by the template for an exciting duel between two magicians, who of course represent the forces of good and evil. The effects are used sparingly but efficiently, the image design is complex and careful. The fairy tale film is particularly worth seeing because of the magician actors Felix von Manteuffel and Christoph Bach . "

Peter M. Gaschler wrote in Das Phantastik-Filmjahr 2018 that it was one of the best ZDF fairy tale hours in recent years. "Highly professional in everything, brilliantly produced ... brilliantly played, a dream of a film from a single source."
