Alemuel [ ɐleːmuˌæɫ ] is a fictional character of the German Alexandra Mueller. She was best known for a video titled Little Shark , which she published on YouTube in early 2007 under her username of the same name. Due to the popularity of the video, Müller received a recording deal .

Little shark

Alemuel achieved fame through the one and a half minute video Little Shark , which was posted on YouTube on January 15, 2007. The video was shot on a New Year's morning after a New Year's Eve party in a remote hut. A party participant did not trust Alexandra Müller that she dared to present her foolishness in public. The video was recorded to prove him wrong.

At the beginning of 2008 the record company EMI Müller offered a record deal with the intention of turning the little shark into a summer hit and establishing the Singspiel as a fashion dance . As with Grup Tekkan, it was not the quality of the musical performance but the popularity of the self-portrayal on the Internet that was decisive for the interest. On May 30th, 2008, the day Alemuel appeared in The Dome 46, the Disco-Beat song was released on CD. The music video is a remix from the small shark productions of the YouTube community and is considered an example of crowdsourcing in the music industry.

In the original video, Alemuel is sitting alone in a large armchair in a corner of the room and offers the moving singspiel “Baby-Hai”, which is also used in children and youth group work.

The Singspiel about the little shark outlines the growth from the “baby shark” to the “great white shark ” through three-syllable sentence fragments and the interjection “Dim Dim ”. After all, the shark hunts a girl, devours her at the end of the song and thereby becomes a "bad shark". During the performance, Alemuel alternated between the role of a frightened girl and that of a voracious beast.

reception

Before classic mass media became aware of Alemuel, their video was viewed almost three million times and commented on more than ten thousand times. The comments included speculation about the making of the video, malicious remarks about Alemuel's appearance and, increasingly, amazement at the video's success.

The spread of the Singspiel on YouTube seemed largely limited to Germany, although it has also reached Austria, Switzerland and even Africa.

After the Netzeitung reported on Alemuel, other media began to be interested in Alemuel and her interpretation of the little shark. In tabloid magazines, the little shark was declared the successor to the crocodile Schnappi , which had become popular on the Internet with a children's song three years earlier and then became a number 1 hit.

After Bravo had doubts about Alemuel's alleged résumé, Alexandra Müller later confirmed in an interview that she had invented the information. Thereupon BILD-Online headlined “Little Shark” - singer lied to everyone ”.

The Bunte noted:

“How does this confused-looking, badly coiffed girl manage to attract so much attention with her infernal chanting and clapping? ... Apparently we love it when other people publicly make themselves eyed in order to distract from our own embarrassments. "

- Henrik John Hohl

In contrast, Der Tagesspiegel wrote in 2009 :

“Alexandra Müller has no problems exhibiting herself. A YouTube video shows her singing the children's song 'Little Shark' into the camera in an increasingly exalted manner. […] Müller declared her entry into the music business as performative art and recorded a hit single with dance sounds under the pseudonym Alemuel. The video ran on MTV, the cell phone ringtone sold well, appearances on Mallorca and in large discos followed. Müller still lives from the royalties today. "
