biography

Terian was born into an Armenian family. Her father was a poet and translator (under the pseudonym Arizad ). He translated the Shahnameh from Persian into Armenian.

In 1947 Terian completed her scientific studies at the University of Tehran and then worked in the university's physics laboratories under M. Hessabi. Her request for financial support for studying abroad was rejected by Hessabi. In an interview, he stated that she was too young to study so much as a woman . She financed her studies herself and received her doctorate in atmospheric physics from the Sorbonne in 1956 . She returned to Iran and became an assistant professor of thermodynamics at Tehran University. A few years later she received a German scholarship for a four-month study trip to solar observatories in what was then the Federal Republic. In 1964, Terian became the first female physics professor in Iran. In 1966 she was admitted to the geophysics committee of the University of Tehran and in 1969 elected head of the university's solar physics department. She was among the founders of Iran's first solar observatory. It was run by the University's Department of Geophysics, where Terian also taught. She retired in 1979.

Iranian parliamentarians and over 100 Iranian Armenians attended their 90th birthday celebration in the Ararat complex . Terian died in March 2011 in her native Tehran. After the funeral in the Tehran Church of the Holy Mother of God , she was buried in the Doulab cemetery .
