The Ararat Stadium ( Persian ورزشگاه آرارات; Armenian Արարատ մարզադաշտ ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Vanak district of the Iranian capital Tehran . It was built in 1971 as part of the Ararat Sports Complex and has 15,000 seats. It is operated by the Armenian cultural organization Ararat , one of the largest organizations of the Armenians in Iran , founded in 1944, and is named after Ararat , the highest mountain in the Armenian highlands that belongs to Turkey today . The venue is used by the football club FC Ararat Tehran , which plays in the Tehran Provincial League. It was also the venue for a game of the Iranian women's national soccer team .

Location and architecture

The sports complex covers an area of 74,000 square meters in the shape of a triangle bounded by Ararat Street, Rashid Yasemi Street and the Kurdistan Expressway. The entrance is on Ararat Street. The football stadium of FC Ararat Tehran was built in 1971 according to plans by the architect Rostom Voskanian (1932-2013). Next to the stadium in the southeast part of the complex is the Holy Cross Chapel (Surp Chatsch), designed by the same architect and completed in 1987, a small concrete building with block-like crosses, which, among other things, commemorates the Iranian-Iraqi soldiers who died in the Iran-Iraq war . Armenian soldiers was built. The Ararat Sports Complex has two swimming pools, basketball halls, billiards, badminton and tennis courts and a sports museum.

Cultural life

Access to most events is only allowed for Christians , so the Armenians are usually among themselves. As long as no Muslims are present, the Christian men and women are allowed to train and watch together, and women are then not bound by the dress code of the Islamic Republic with headscarves . According to statements from participants, the Ararat sports complex has its very own Armenian atmosphere, which is clearly different from the world of Muslims around it. Even the dominant language in 2017 is Armenian, and Persian is spoken very little afterwards. Most of the inscriptions are also only in Armenian.

However, there are also inter-ethnic events, for example football games, where the general rules of the Islamic Republic must be observed. In September 2016, the Pan-Armenian Games were held at the Ararat Sports Complex in Tehran with around 800 athletes from Iran, Armenia and Georgia. In addition to the prelate of the Tehran diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church , Sepuh Sargsjan , Hassan Rouhani's advisor Ali Younesi was also present at the opening ceremony .

In addition to sporting events, the Ararat complex also hosts birthday parties, weddings, and various other cultural events. The astronomer Alenoush Terian , for example, celebrated her 90th birthday on November 9, 2010 in the Ararat complex with a large number of guests .

Well-known athletes

The main sports club that plays in the Ararat complex is the Ararat Tehran football club , which existed from 1944 to 2009 and was dissolved due to bankruptcy. In 2014, however, it was re-established and played in the Tehran Provincial League in 2015. Although he never played a dominant role in Iranian football, he produced at least two important Iranian football players: During the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi , one of them was Andranik Eskandarian , who later played for Taj (now Esteghlal Tehran ). After the Islamic Revolution , it was Andranik Teymourian who began his football career at the Ararat Stadium, then played for Esteghlal Tehran and later for the Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League, then again for Esteghlal Tehran and Tractor Sazi Täbris , and who became the captain of the Iranian national soccer team in 2015 .

Use by the women's national soccer team

The Iranian women's national soccer team has also used the Ararat Stadium as their home ground. In April 2006 she played against a selection of the Berlin BSV Al-Dersimspor 2-2. The players had to wear their heads and only women were allowed to attend - 200 spectators attended. Iranian female soccer players usually only play indoors.
