Sepuh Sargsyan (Traditional Սեպուհ Սարգսեան , reformed Eastern Armenian Սեպուհ Սարգսյան ) or Sebouh Sarkissian ( Western Armenian Սեբուհ Սարկիսյան , Persian سبوه سرکیسیان; * 1946 in Qamishli , Syria ) is an Armenian Apostolic clergyman. He is currently the prelate and archbishop of the Armenian diocese of Tehran , which has its seat at the Saint Sarkis Cathedral in Tehran and reports to the Catholic of Cilicia .

Life

Sebouh Sarkissian grew up among Armenians in Qamishli on the border with Turkey with Western Armenian and Arabic and attended the Armenian school. In 1961 he began his priest training at the Armenian seminary of the Catholic of Cilicia in Antelias in Lebanon . In 1965 he became a deacon and was ordained a priest in 1968 . From 1968 to 1970 he studied Arabic literature and Islamic philosophy at St. Joseph University in Beirut . From 1970 to 1974 he worked as a pastor in Basra ( Iraq ) and taught Armenian language , history and religion at an Iraqi-Armenian school. In 1978 he was appointed to the Council of Churches of the Middle East and from 1978 to 1998 he was General Director of the Armenian Sunday Schools in Lebanon, responsible for religious instruction for Armenian youth. From 1979 to 1981 he studied Christian-Muslim relations at the University of Birmingham , where he obtained his master's degree in 1981. In 1997 Sebouh Sarkissian was appointed to the International Council of Churches by Archbishop Aram I. He participated in numerous conferences at the seminary of Antelias and was particularly responsible for the dialogue between Islam and Christianity. He is the only priest of the Cilicia Catholic with a degree in Islamic Studies.

In 1992 he was ordained bishop and was Patriarchal Vicar for Kuwait and the Arab Gulf States from 1992 to 1998. From 1998 to 1999 he headed the Armenian Diocese of Kuwait. After the death of the Armenian Archbishop of Tehran, Artak Manukian (1931–1999), who was born in Beirut , Sebouh Sarkissian was initially appointed as his deputy ( locum tenens ), so that he was now responsible for the Armenians in the Diocese of Tehran and reached on December 26, 1999, Tehran. On June 6, 2000, he was unanimously elected prelate of the Armenian diocese of Tehran as one of three candidates at the 11th National Representative Assembly of the Armenian Prelature Tehran and was confirmed by Catholicos Aram I. Since then he has been Archbishop of the Diocese of Tehran of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

On April 4, 2016 Sepuh Sargsyan held a memorial service in the Saint Sarkis Cathedral in memory of the Armenian soldiers in fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh with the armed forces of Azerbaijan between the 1st and the 4th of April in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict were killed. On July 24, 2017, he was received in Stepanakert by the President of the Artsakh Republic in Nagorno-Karabakh, Bako Sahakjan .

In an interview with the Armenian-language Tehran daily Alik in November 2016, Sepuh Sargsyan expressed concern about extremist Islamist movements in the Middle East that threaten the lives of Oriental Christians , but stressed that, in contrast, for Armenian Christians in the Islamic Republic of Iran is possible to live in peace. He greeted "our brave people in Syria and especially the Syrian-Armenian children".
