Alexander Alexandrovich Krakow ( Russian Александр Александрович Кракау * August 11 . Jul / 23. August  1855 greg. In St. Petersburg , † March 29 jul. / 11. April  1909 greg. ) Was a Russian electric chemist and university lecturer .

Life

Cracow, son of the architect Alexander Cracow , studied chemistry at the University of St. Petersburg , was a student of the chemist Alexander Butlerow and graduated in 1879. He then became a laboratory assistant in the chemical laboratory of the Academy of Sciences . At the same time he taught chemistry in the higher courses for women (1881-1884) and also worked at the University of St. Petersburg.

From 1886–1891, Kraków was the first in Russia to hold an electrochemistry lecture in the Post Telegraph Office's college, which had just opened and which in 1891 became the St. Petersburg Electrical Engineering Institute (ETI). Cracow was appointed professor to the new chair in chemistry in 1891 and remained so until his death. He participated in scientific research. He investigated the electrical conductivity of palladium hydride (1892–1895) and the rectification of alternating current by electrochemical means (from 1898). In 1902 he published the first Russian textbook on theoretical electrochemistry.

Krakow actively participated in public scientific events in St. Petersburg and Russia. In 1906 when the EIT Popov Prize was founded , Krakow was a member of the award committee alongside Pawel Woinarowski (chair), Pyotr Ossadtschi , Nikolai Yegorow , Alexei Petrowski and others. In 1907 Krakow took part in the 1st Mendeleev Congress for General and Applied Chemistry of the ETI in St. Petersburg.
