Alexander Beckmann

Alexander Beckmann (born February 16, 1955 in Düsseldorf ) is a German diplomat . Most recently he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Togo from 2008 to 2011 .

Life

After finishing school in 1973 Beckmann worked as a temporary soldier from 1973 to 1975. He then studied law at the universities in Bonn and Strasbourg . In 1981 he passed the 1st state examination in law, followed by the 2nd state examination in 1984. From 1984 to 1985 Beckmann worked as a lawyer and in a freelance legal position for the German Armed Forces .

After joining the Foreign Service in 1986, he was employed at the Foreign Office , at the Embassy in Iran and at the Consulate General in Los Angeles .

From 1993 to 1996 Beckmann was initially d'affaires ai (ad interim) and then to 1997, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Tajikistan . After that he was head of administration at the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) Berlin for four years .

This was followed by a renewed assignment in the Foreign Office from 2001, most recently as deputy head of a department in the central department (2003 to 2005). From 2005 to June 2006 Beckmann was Deputy Head of the International Court of Justice task force in the Foreign Office in Berlin. He was then ambassador to Eritrea until 2008 . Between August 2008 and 2011 he was ambassador to Togo and, after a leave of absence, was replaced by Joachim Weiß , the previous ambassador to Burundi .
